"Jolly Roger" Armchair – Fabio Novembre for Gufram
Adopt a piece with a rock and rebellious temperament with the "Jolly Roger" armchair, an audacious creation by Fabio Novembre for the iconic publisher Gufram. This monolithic polyethylene armchair takes the form of a monumental human skull. Combining the world of pirates with poetic geography, its seat conceals a world map engraved in relief. A masterpiece of contemporary design, equally at home in a trendy living room or on an outdoor terrace.
The Allegory of Design: Between Rebellion and Freedom
The name Jolly Roger directly references the traditional black flag of pirates (the famous skull on a black background). Fabio Novembre designed this armchair as a tribute to free spirits, modern adventurers, and those who dare to break the codes of conformity.
The Skull at the Back: Seen from behind, the armchair reveals a stylized, dark, and impressive human skull, molded with remarkable organic fluidity. It is a modern design reinterpretation of the concept of Memento Mori.
The Inner Planisphere: This is the poetic detail that balances the object's darkness. The interior of the seat features a world map engraved in glossy relief on the matte background. Fabio Novembre explains that the map is there to remind us that we all have the world in our hands (or rather under our bottoms!) and that travel is an inner quest.
The Contrast of Textures: The textured matte black finish of the overall structure contrasts superbly with the smooth, satin appearance of the engraved continents inside, which beautifully catch the light.
Features
The Gufram Myth: Gufram is the legendary Italian brand of Radical Design, famous for its provocative furniture-sculptures (such as the mouth-shaped sofa Bocca or the coat rack Cactus). This armchair directly continues this irreverent heritage.
Indoor / Outdoor (In & Out): Made of rotomolded polyethylene, the Jolly Roger is extremely robust, weather-resistant, and UV-resistant. It can therefore adorn a designer living room or become the centerpiece of a rooftop, garden, or poolside.

💡 Gallerist's Style Tip
"The Jolly Roger is a theatrical piece of furniture. To create a visual shock, place it with its back to the main walkway of the room (e.g., facing a bay window or a coffee table), so that visitors discover the monumental skull first upon entering. Pair it with raw materials like concrete or metal, or conversely with a very colorful Pop piece to play on total contrast, as suggested by the giant Goldorak figurine in the background in your showroom."
