"Ribbon" Armchair (No. 582) & Ottoman – Pierre Paulin for Artifort (c. 1965)
Treat yourself to a design legend with this "Ribbon" armchair and its matching ottoman, designed by Pierre Paulin in 1965 for Artifort. A true organic and ergonomic sculpture, its continuous ribbon-like line perfectly conforms to the human body. Dressed in a timeless ecru/cream textured fabric, this iconic set embodies the quintessence of 60s and 70s modernism.
Gallery note: Item sold as is with patina and structural wear on the armchair's base.
A Revolutionary Icon in Design History
The Ribbon Chair is not just a simple armchair; it is a major technological and artistic breakthrough in the history of furniture.
The Ribbon Metaphor: In one continuous stroke, Pierre Paulin reinvented the traditional armchair. Its steel tube structure covered with injected foam creates a continuous loop, a fluid undulation that serves as a seat, backrest, and armrests simultaneously.
The Coordinated Ottoman: Shown prominently in the photo, the footrest perfectly echoes the same inverted T-shape movement, offering a unique continuity of line for an absolutely relaxed position.
The T-Base: Both the armchair and the ottoman rest on a grey lacquered geometric pedestal-shaped base, which stabilizes the seating while giving the impression that the fabric floats above the ground.
Condition Report
As an exceptional gallery, we guarantee total transparency regarding the condition of our vintage pieces:
Upholstery and Fabric: The cream-colored textured fabric is in very good condition, beautifully highlighting the generous curves of the seat.
Structure / Base (Armchair): As visible in the macro shots, the lacquered base of the armchair shows a significant structural crack/crazing at the junction of the vertical upright. This defect, common on vintage editions due to the stresses exerted on the material, should be noted. The piece can be kept as is for collectors who appreciate original patina, or it can be restored by a specialized workshop (internal reinforcement and surface relacquering).
Base (Ottoman): The ottoman's base, on the other hand, is perfectly preserved.

💡 Gallerist's Style Tip
"Pierre Paulin's Ribbon Chair is a total work of art that needs space to breathe. Don't put it against a wall: place this set in the center of a living room or an open 360° space so that the architectural profile of its seat and ottoman can be admired. Its textured cream color will harmonize beautifully with raw concrete elements, precious woods, or, as here, near strong industrial pieces."
