Be captivated by the playful spirit and graphic elegance of the legendary “Kangourou” coffee table, a major creation by French-Hungarian designer Mathieu Matégot, dated 1954. Composed of an inseparable duo of nesting tables of asymmetrical sizes, this iconic piece of post-war design combines an airy black structure with a vibrant saffron yellow satellite table. A masterpiece of architectural lightness and a superb design investment.

Visual Impact: The Kinetic Magic of Rigitulle

Mathieu Matégot revolutionized furniture by inventing Rigitulle, a perforated steel sheet worked like lace or fabric, of which this table is the most accomplished expression.

Organic Interlocking: The main table adopts a free organic shape, almost like an egg or a bean, with a circular cutout. The small yellow table fits into it with millimeter precision, like a joey in its mother's pouch – hence its poetic name Kangourou.

Moiré and Transparency Effects: The fine perforation of the black metal creates a fascinating optical moiré effect. By allowing the geometric patterns of the floor to show through, it preserves a total sense of space and never visually weighs down a room.

The 50s Chromatic Contrast: The radical combination of textured matte black and lacquered buttercup yellow brings immediate dynamism. The yellow tabletop intensely captures light, creating a magnetic focal point at the center of the structure.

Features

Ingenious Modularity: The two tables can be nested to form a single graphic ensemble or separated. The small yellow table then becomes a side table or an independent end table, depending on your staging needs.

Kinetic Art Sculpture: More than just a coffee table, the Kangourou changes its profile depending on the viewing angle. Its tripod base structure made of thin curved iron lines gives it an almost living, weightless appearance.

High-End Edition: Manufactured with absolute respect for Matégot's original design and techniques, the quality of the Rigitulle finishes and the durability of the lacquers are impeccable.

💡 Gallerist's Style Tip

"The Kangourou table is an aesthetic statement in itself. To highlight the unique moiré effect of its Rigitulle, display it on a graphic rug or a beautiful light oak parquet floor. It is from a top-down or three-quarter view that its asymmetry reveals its full splendor. Do not hesitate to slightly separate the small yellow top, shifting it outwards to break the line and energize your living room space."
